Sizing Your Dog House

The basic rule to determine the proper size dog house for your dog is that it should be high enough for your dog to stand,  wide enough to turn around, and long enough to lie comfortably.

Well, that’s great if you can bring your dog to the store and make sure he fits, but usually that’s not an option. And if you’re building the dog house yourself, you’ll obviously need to know the dimensions beforehand.

If you search the internet, you’ll find some very detailed formulas for sizing a doghouse. Some are based on breed. Fine if your dog meets breed standards, but many don’t. And what about mixed-breed dogs? Others require detailed measurements, which you plug into a magical formula to get the perfect dimensions. That’s way too much unnecessary work.

The simple solution is simply to make the inside width 70% of your dog’s length, and the length 1.5 times his length, nose to base of tail (when standing). If using a peaked roof, make it high enough for the dog to sit in the middle. If the dog house will have a flat or slanted roof, it needs to be high enough for the dog to sit inside.

Using these simply instructions, you can easily determine the correct size for your best friend’s dog house.
